Gyms, health and fitness clubs have grown in the past five years, supported by public health initiatives that shed light on the role of fitness in fighting diabetes, obesity, and other health conditions. This trend is evidenced by the increase in gym membership over the period as more people value fitness as an integral part of their health program. Additionally, population growth, especially among the 18- to 64-year-olds who make up the largest gym demographic, has sparked demand for gym memberships. The South African gym, health and fitness club market had total sales of $ 0.3 billion in 2020, representing an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.4 between 2016 and 2020.
Demand for fitness club memberships typically shows the highest growth in the first three months of the year. For example, 30% of all new members join the gym and health club in the first few months of the year, driven by New Year's resolutions that could inspire consumers to adopt healthier lifestyles.
To increase the number of new memberships in the other months, many gyms such as Virgin Active, Gym Company, Ignite have offered discounts and monthly memberships; However, January still encompasses the majority of member sales. Knowing this, Pro Fitness is aiming for a grand opening in January.
The growing preference for easily accessible online training, in-home personal training, and smaller gyms with fewer amenities has favoured boutique gyms that have served a niche market for local consumers. The market share of lower-budget gyms is growing as a result of consumers replacing expensive all-inclusive clubs (including related facilities like racquetball courts and swimming pools) with gyms with fewer amenities. Pro Fitness will adjust to growth within the upward trend of boutique gyms that are seeing growing interest from consumers. Providing a variety of courses based on comprehensive personal training, online, and at home. Pro Fitness will benefit from continuing fitness trends in South Africa within a target market niche.
Qualifications required by most personal training certifications include: 18 years or older, high school diploma or equivalent, a CPR / AED certification, and passing a certified personal trainer course.
The National Certificate in Fitness is the minimum personal training certification required by Virgin Active and Planet Fitness on-site gyms that allows one to work as a personal trainer on their premises.
